Boys will be boys

This is my ever wonderful son getting staples out of his head. I would have the before and during posted but can't seem to get those photos from the cell to computer. So, he says he was playing football with the guys and was taken down. Not wanting to call his mother not even a block away, he walks two to his friends house. Washes up and then calls me. We pick THE BOY up at another friends house, who I called ahead of time to keep him there. 8 Staples and 5 hours later were home. A boy can never be man with out a trip to the ER is what I kept telling myself. This would never happen with my girls! Zoom in on the pics and you will his all the staples.

Teachers

My two wonderful baby sisters want to be teachers. Not just any old teacher but elementary school ones. I totally give it up to them. I couldn't do it! They've both worked in the nursery at church and loved it. They would have the funniest stories to share about the kids. Did the child caring thing just skip me? My body cringes when I think about child care. I have taught in primary before but the kids were older and fun. We would lay a blanket out on the floor and take our shoes off before I gave the lesson. Some how I end up in the nursery most Sundays. Don't really know why! Nursery is always loudest when I'm in there. And I eat all the good snacks! For a while nursery had 100's of balls. I would throw them at the kids heads when they fought, cried for no reason, or out of boredom. Most of the kids thought it was funny. The gym/nursery at church has a huge air duct that is perfect for little children to put their fingers in. One kid stuffed some kind bread like food in it. I told them that a monkey was being bad so I locked it in the vent. Warning them that they shouldn't stick anything in there including fingers or the monkey would bite them off! It was great to see how long they stood looking for the monkey. What was funnier was listening to them try to explain the story to their parents. When I first moved here I spread a rumor that I hated all children. Well, I guess it started as a joke at first. Do you know, I rarely babysit. Wonder why? When I am asked to babysit... I tell the parent that I don't guarantee the child will be in the same condition as when they left them. So kudos to my lovely sisters and the decisions they've made. Anthony thinks you are crazy and wants to know why anyone would want to be a teacher.

Blueberry Picking

Just thought I would share the first time the kids and I have ever seen a blueberry bush. They say bush but these look like trees to me. We went with three other wonderful families that said yes to my insane universe. The kids had a good time, well child's #2 and #3 did. #1 caught the fun buzz after he and his friend found out how much an underdeveloped blueberry hurt when thrown at others. No casualties though. No, I lie. One of the kids was stung by a wasp.

I didn't find out until a little later and I do mean a "little" later that the blueberry has great digestive properties. You would think that I had learned my lesson to not eat so many of them. No. They were just to good and at .90 a pound.... what the H E double hockey sticks.

The kids asked me why I always "make" them pick fruit. I always thought it was because it was a cheap family outing and a way to increase our food storage (Mormon thing). The truth is that my grandparents on both sides were migrant workers and I remember seeing them work. It was hard and dirty work that I was luck enough not to have to do. Growing up around all the seasonal produce one could possible consume was great. The smell is what I remember the most. Clean and sweet. When we drove with the windows down I would stick my arm out the window and feel the temp drop when we hit the fields. If I could get my kids to feel just a drop of what that felt like to me........ It's important for them to know their roots no matter how dirty it is. I hope it humbles them a little to know these things.

and I thought I had it bad.......

This book should have been a quick read but didn't end up that way. Jeannette Walls wrote the book as if she were sitting and talking to me. As I was reading, memories of my childhood would pop up and make me put the book down to remember. Wow! Just can't believe how messed up things were then. I guess some children have to go through rougher trials to prepare them for whatever lies ahead. I would never want my children to go through what I did or worst yet Jeannette Walls. However shielding them from every danger might do them more harm in the long run?.?. I can only do, like I like to believe that my parents did, which is that they did the best with what they had/knew for raising children. Every generation gets better than the last, is what I tell myself when I think I'm messing up my children. How I wish I had a village to help me raise my kids. A wife would be nice too. But no, just me. Like I tell my kids when they get frustrated and angry with me, "you picked me to be your mom, next time chose wiser." I do apologize ahead of time for all the therapy they will have to pay for my ignorance and flaws. So back to the book! I did like it and do recommend it to others. The book makes me not want to complain ( not that I do a lot of that anyway) because it could always be worse.
